Let me just start by saying… I HATE cooking. I don’t workout. My kids eat candy and I let them have chocolate milk. Both of my children were formula-fed… and sometimes I forget to brush their teeth. But you know what? I am a damn good mom! I am 100% confident that my babies have felt loved every. single. day. of their lives. And that is enough.
Unfortunately “mom shaming” is totally real. Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt the heat from another mama. My hand’s waving sky high, what about yours? (Hell, some of you are probably shaming me based on my first paragraph.) Let’s proceed.
It’s a maternal instinct to raise your kids the way you see fit, and it’s easy to turn complete animal if you ever feel second-guessed by another parent. After all, no one knows your kids like you do. You know what’s best for them, and who are they to say what’s right? So why do we judge other moms for doing things differently? Are we all insecure? Seeking perfection?
The truth is, we’re all just moms losing our minds one kid at a time.
Setting New Standards:
I do think there is a such thing as a “perfect mom”. And I’ll even go as far as to say that most of us are! Why is it when we think of that term, we automatically picture a 1960s housewife in an apron and heels serving up a nutritionally-balanced lunch on a silver platter? That mom’s not making anyone feel good about themselves… Not the average mom next door, and most certainly not their curious little kid with grass stains on both knees. Perfect moms do exist, but I’ll tell you right now… it’s not her.
Your kids want the version of you that is happy. They want the mom that brings them a popsicle in the sandbox on a warm day, then chases their sticky body around with the water hose before going inside. They want a mom that laughs and plays. And sometimes they need a mom who yells, and who makes them pick up their toys.
You’re allowed to be the mom who buys matching clothes for the whole family if you want to. It’s also okay if your baby wears only a diaper 80% of the time. If a perfect house and heart-shaped PB&Js are your vibe, that’s wonderful! And if you haven’t touched the laundry pile in a week, you’re still AMAZING!
Go easy on yourself. Your kids love you just the way you are. If you have ever wondered how those “perfect moms” do it, people are looking at you and wondering the same thing.
