If you know me, you know I love a good theme. Birthdays, bedrooms, holiday parties… they all have to have one! Brock’s Wild One Birthday Party was my first opportunity to plan a party with a theme for a boy. No pink, no sparkles, princesses or bows (my favorite things), but it was so incredibly fun to run wild with a jungle theme that was all boy.

I’m sure most of you with children have experienced the first-birthday-blues in some way, shape, or form around the time your child turned a year old. As fun and entertaining as one-year-olds are, it’s slightly heartbreaking when those Facebook memories pop up of your tiny baby a whole YEAR ago. How in the world has he even existed that long, and where did the time go?! I did have a little tinge of sadness realizing that my baby boy is now a, dare I say it, a toddler.

However, the morning of his party, I was able to pull my ridiculous dramatic-mama self together enough to host his Wild One birthday with all of his toddling friends. I wiped the tear from my eye and hugged the sweetest, cuddly big boy. It was time to party after all!

Wild One Party Decorations!

I ordered this party pack and the plastic animal figurines off of Amazon. The party pack included so many cute details… some that didn’t make an appearance (keep reading to find out why). The giraffe’s party hat on the smash cake was a DIY project that my one day sister-in-law (wink face) made for the party. She made several, and I so wish I had pictures of all of them! Honestly this party would not have come together last minute if it wasn’t for her and my brother-in-law coming to save the day. That’s a whole other story though!

I went through my kids’ toyboxes and found all the jungle animal items we could use at the party. Stuffed animals, barrel-of-monkeys, fur blankets, etc. I used these foam interlocking tiles on the concrete to protect all the little crawlers’ knees as they played (I bring these outside for Brock to crawl on when we play outside… and Heidi likes to build castles out of them).

The plates and napkins we used were these from Target. How stinking cute are they?! The alligator ring toss was leftover from Heidi’s Tinkerbell/Peter Pan birthday party (see that post here). All the other decorations came from Hobby Lobby for 50% off while party supplies was on sale. Score!

DIY Smash Cake

I made the smash cake and the cupcakes myself, just like I have for all of our parties, and it’s totally easy. I’m a novice baker, at best. Honestly I don’t even know if you can call me a baker, since I only use boxed cake mix and store bought icing. But oh well… if you’re looking for Betty Crocker Mommy you’re on the wrong page.

Honestly though, if I can do it so can you! My secret is to use these Pyrex dishes as cake pans. Since the set comes with two of the same size, you can make a 2-layer cake in whatever size and shape you want. I even have used these to make a dog-bone shaped cake for our sweet pupper’s birthday (future post).

For the smash cake, I used the set of 2 small Pyrex storage containers. After coating them with nonstick spray and mixing up the cake batter, I fill them both just over halfway with the mix. Make sure you preheat the oven based on the box instructions for cupcakes. Use the rest of the batter to make actual cupcakes in cute, colorful liners, and pop them all in the oven at the same time. SO simple!

When they come out of the oven, let them cool until they are room temperature. Next, cut the tops off with a serrated knife so that they’re flat and stack them with a layer of icing between. Then cover with a generous amount of icing, and pipe around the bottom if you’re feeling fancy.

If you scrolled up to inspect my craftmanship on the cake, you’re probably thinking yea, it’s nothing special. But who the heck cares? Your kid is literally going to smash it. Kids are expensive as can be, and if I can save $40 by throwing some cake mix in a Pyrex dish and calling it good, that’s what I’m going to do. I had the best little helpers in the kitchen, and I actually think it turned out pretty cute!

The Watering Hole

June birthdays are great for so many reasons, but let’s be honest… it’s hot! When I sent the Facebook invite out, I made sure to tell all the parents to bring swimsuits for the little ones. Kids love splashing around, so I knew this jungle theme party would need a “watering hole”. It worked out perfectly that our splash pad and kiddy pool have animals on them as well.

I should have just titled this post Jason and Taylor Save the Day and are the Greatest Ever, because I’m about to mention them again. Their gift to Brock was the coolest DIY water table, and it was such a hit with all the kids! It was the perfect, toddler-friendly addition to the Watering Hole. They deserve a trophy, or a tv show. The new Chip and Jo? I think so.

Jungle Snacks (Free Printables!)

I had a lot of fun planning the snack table for Brock’s Wild One Birthday Party. I even created these free printables to share with you, so you can use them for your little wild one! See below for the toddler-approved menu.

Party Favor Printable

I didn’t stop there with my printables! For party favors, I made up little treat bags full of animal crackers (regular and chocolate ones). The printable says, “Thanks for swinging by! Love, Brock”. You can download the printable below and personalize it with your child’s name. Then you just have to fold it and staple them on to the bags. So cute, and minimal effort!

Conclusion

Sometimes I overwhelm myself and get overly ambitious with the things I do. I decided to have this party the day before we left the country for a week. I still hadn’t packed for any of us, I was doing the cake and food myself, and I had two kids to juggle all the while. There were several decorations we didn’t even use. My husband let all the animal shaped balloons fly away right after he filled them with helium (it’s funny now). And we were still setting everything out after the guests started showing up.

You know what though? The party was so fun and no one cared about the less-than-perfect details! My little girl actually said it was the best day ever and she wants it to be Brocky’s birthday everyday. How’s that for perspective?
